Requirements for Assignment:

1. You should have a minimum of two primary sources.

2. You should have a minimum of two secondary sources.

3. State your paper thesis/paper topic and/or argumentative question.

What is an annotated bibliography?

• A list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 100-150words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

o I highly recommend you take this part of the assignment seriously. The more thorough research and work you do here, the more smoothly your essay writing will be! If you have your sources laid out, explained, and a solid outline ready, your paper-writing process should go very smoothly.

Primary vs. Secondary Sources

• Primary sources are photographs, newspaper articles, letters, diaries, or other artifacts that were produced during/by a specific time period, event, or person.

• Secondary sources are usually essays, articles, or books that analyze and interpret a set of primary sources in order to tell a story about a specific time period, event, or person.

Where Can I Obtain Sources From?

• Primary sources can be obtained from a number of locations. Government archival websites, historical sites with documented speeches/letters/proposals, archeological evidence dug up and displayed in museums, etc.

• Secondary sources can be obtained from our textbook and other books/articles/journals you can find on the subject. Any secondhand account.

Example of a secondary source in an annotated bibliography:

• Suetonius, and Robert Graves. The Twelve Caesars. Harmondsworth, Middlesex: Penguin Books, 2007.

o Suetonius had access to the Roman imperial archives to write his work and used them, along with eyewitness accounts, to produce his biographical works. This book chronicles the public careers and private lives of powerful men in Rome. From famous senators, orators, Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar,to powerful individuals much later in the Empire’s life. This source will provide political, social, and military details for my discussions of Octavian and relevant others.
