ACTIVITY: Write a sample body paragraph that uses the following two quotations:

1. Primary source: “TRUE! –nervous –very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses –not destroyed –not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?”
2. Secondary source: “In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator-protagonist displays typical symptoms of partial insanity or “moral insanity.”
Shen, Dan. Style and Rhetoric of Short Narrative Fiction. London; Routledge, 2014. Print (p.46)
1. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” shows a character who – although he claims to be sane – is really deranged. 2. The narrator’s claims of sanity throughout the story show that he has no idea how normal, rational, and moral people should behave. 3. As Dan Shen writes, “the narrator-protagonist displays typical symptoms of partial insanity or ‘moral insanity’ (46). 4. We should understand “moral insanity” here to mean the simple decency society expects from reasonable people, and it is clear that the narrator does not possess this decency. 5. At the start of the story he asks the reader “why will you say that I am mad?” 6. The answer to this question is “because he behaves in way that is outside of traditional moral limits.
