A body paragraph in a literary essay must contain the following elements
1. A topic sentence, in which you make a clear statement of opinion
2. An explanation of your topic sentence, if necessary
3. An illustration of your point using secondary sources (i.e. a quotation or paraphrase)
4. An explanation/analysis of your illustration (please remember that this analysis does not have to agree with the quotation
5. A supporting quotation from your primary source
6. A final statement that clearly shows how your primary quotation relates to your secondary quotation
Please note, that the order above is a suggestion, not a requirement. You can change the order if you wish (e.g., put the primary quote before the secondary qote, etc.)
ACTIVITY: Write a sample body paragraph that uses the following two quotations:
1. Primary source: TRUE! nervous very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?
2. Secondary source: In The Tell-Tale Heart, the narrator-protagonist displays typical symptoms of partial insanity or moral insanity.
Shen, Dan. Style and Rhetoric of Short Narrative Fiction. London; Routledge, 2014. Print (p.46)
1. Edgar Allan Poes The Tell-Tale Heart shows a character who although he claims to be sane is really deranged. 2. The narrators claims of sanity throughout the story show that he has no idea how normal, rational, and moral people should behave. 3. As Dan Shen writes, the narrator-protagonist displays typical symptoms of partial insanity or moral insanity (46). 4. We should understand moral insanity here to mean the simple decency society expects from reasonable people, and it is clear that the narrator does not possess this decency. 5. At the start of the story he asks the reader why will you say that I am mad? 6. The answer to this question is because he behaves in way that is outside of traditional moral limits.
