American University Satanism and Christianity in the American Context Essay Final Paper or Project:

Your final project can be either an essay or alternative project (in consultation with me), in which you to examine a religious tradition of your own choosing as it is lived and expressed in the contemporary American context. What has changed? What has remained the same? This essay is your opportunity to reflect upon the theme of the course by exploring how religious traditions have changed over time. This project will have four parts: a proposal, an outline and bibliography, the final product, and a presentation. Specific details will be provided.

Your paper must include an introductory paragraph that contains a thesis statement. What is your paper about? Why is this important to you? How are you going to argue your point? Be aware that since these papers are short, you will need to choose a rather narrow topic to discuss. Choose a single question and make sure every paragraph and sentence addresses your exact topic and thesis.

Your final paper or project is up to you. The only requirement for your topic is that it remains within our class theme: interacting and changing religious communities. If you choose to write a paper, the expectation is that the paper will be written academically, resembling a research paper. The length is approximately 1,500 words or 6 double-spaced pages, which does not include the bibliography. You must cite at least 6 separate sources in the paper (books and academic articles; try to avoid popular publications).

If you are doing a project, the same level of scholarship is expected. Examples of projects are: descriptive religious video, organized personal interviews, and religious art comparison (requires a paper still, though different from the research paper option).

Satanism and Christianity in the American Context
Introduction
Satanism is a religion that emerged distinctly in America which has two separate groups of
believers, categorized in affiliations they adhere to. The two groups formed are of those who
attend to the church of Satan founded by Anton Lavey in 1966, and those who attend to the
temple of Satan founded by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jarry in 2013.
Christianity, on the other hand, is among the dominations found in America that dominate with
the largest share of believers compared to other religions. This is because Christianity assumes
many different forms in America, hence drawing close large congregations.
Thesis statement
The purpose of this paper is to examine the religious development of Satanism and Christianity
in America, as seen in the different sacred practices that have been dynamic over time.

A large number of believers has received population – Satanism in
America today from both ends of the satanic cult, which are the Satan church and
the Satan temple

Forms of Satanism – the doctrines of sacredness has taken different
ways within Satanism in America. The kind that is prominent among people is as
follows.

Romantic Satanism –Romantic Satanism attempts to define the social
product of sacred myths in communities, in a manner that Satan exists to challenge
the Christian believer (Milton 1670 np).

THINGS THAT HAVE REMAINED THE SAME

Beliefs/Faith – Satanic followers do not have a belief that Satan is literary
in existence, and the worship of Satan is not encouraged as a deity.

Hierarchy – Satanism has remained intact in the hierarchical structure and
strategy, through which the chain of directives and instructions flow. The following is the

Priesthood – The class or category of priests in Satanism has not changed,
because the priesthood ship is still made up of the council of nine that forms the body that
rules Satanism (Lewis 2014 pp.407).

Changes in Christianity
•
Population – Religious masses have made remarkable changes in
population growth in America. Christianity can be considered far much ahead as
the significant faith that people identify themselves with (Coe 2015 pp.754).
•
Christian fundamentalism – This is American Protestantism that was
discovered to counter theological modernism in the 19th century. The main focus
was to transform traditional Christian beliefs that would pave the way for newer
developments in social and natural sciences.

Nature of work (Evangelism) – Christianity in America has been
dominated by evangelistic mode of worshipping and connection to religious
traditions.
•
THINGS THAT HAVE REMAINED THE SAME
•
Religious faith – a large number of Americans (about 77%) have kept
the religious faith intact, which acts as identity among the various form of
Christianity affiliations (Pew research Centre 2015 np).
•
Worship practices – Americans in the religion often gather in
specified venues on selected day(s) of the week to implement their worship practices.
Despite the various forms of worship methods and practices among Americans, all
Christian dominations are organized under one administrative structure, to which
members and officials are answerable.
•
Liturgical worship – This is a practice majorly associated with Roman
Catholic Christians. Liturgical worship in America has maintained the same trend
from ancient times up to today.

Relationship between Christianity and Satanism
•
The satanic invention from Christianity – According to Lujik (2016 np),
Christianity played a pivotal role in advancing the character of Satan as arch
representative of darkness, since the early ages. Christianity further developed the idea of
Satan as an imaginary entity of the image of good Christians.
•
Conclusion
Through the study, it is evident that Christianity and Satanism have undergone significant
developments as reflected in the sacred and ritual practices discussed. Despite the growth and
dominance of Christianity in America, Satanism, as established in the categories faces(church of
Satan and the temple of Satan), have managed to win souls with a significant number of
followers.
